As World War II battered the planet,
Howard Hughes, the aviation industrialist was contracted to build the worlds largest aircraft to transport troops over U-boats. When the one protype was finished, the war was over and his project was under Senate investigation. The press dubbed the giant plane made out of wood,
"The Spruce Goose".

Hughes was determined to prove that the effort was not a fluke, so on Nov. 2 1947, to the surprise of all watching, he lifted the 400,000 pound monster 70 feet into the air for a one mile flight. It was then put in storage for 30 years-
and a myth was born.

After Hughes death in 1976, the 'Goose' was put on display in a huge dome in Long Beach, CA next to the 'Queen Mary' ocean liner. Here it stayed until it was sold in 1992. The "Spruce Goose" is now on display at a new museum in McMinnville, Oregon..
